White elephant was created in 1945 by Robert Maderholz in Ettenstatt, Bavaria as a pipe maker. His son Michael took over the company in 1984 producing White Elephant Meerschaum filters. These are still the only meerschaum pipe filters produced.
Having no heirs Michael sold the company to Kopp smoking systems in 1999 and stays on as production manager.
Meerschaum is a magnesium silicate it has a porous structure that is able to absorb large amounts of liquid like a sponge. The meerschaum used to be imported from Tanzania, now it is imported from Turkey.
Some people use the 6mm filters in products in ‘joints’. Meerschaum when used as a filter does precisely that ‘filter’ it’s natural properties absorb nicotine and filter out terpenes.
Later active charcoal filters were added to the portfolio. These give a give a ‘cleaner’ smoke without a negative impact on taste. Finally added were pipe cleaners available in cotton 100s or bristle in 80s.
The meerschaum filters are available in 9mm in 20s 40s and also 6mm in 45s with a great RRP!
Activated Charcoal filters come in 9mm 20s and 40s Also available is the charcoal 6mm in 45s.
Finally are the super mix a blend of meerschaum and charcoal for a mild and dry smoking experience. These are 9mm and in 20s.
Whilst the 9mm are an obvious choice for the pipe smoker, the 6mm filters are sometimes used in cigarettes. They’re also popular in ‘head shops’
